Novell Netware Lab: Instructor Guide

Lab Rationale

This lab will introduce students to the Novell Netware operating system and allow students to better respond to the Netware platform in there professional lives. Additionally forming a basis for understand the Novell e-directory will allow students to have hands on experience working with one of the future trends in e-directory networking the combination of e-directory and Linux through Novell’s acquisition of Suse.

Lab Goals

Allow students to have practical experience with the fundamentals of Novell networking
Give students practical experience with Novell purge and recovery software
Allow students to experience off-console forensics in regards to the Novell imanager system.

Assignment

Three images of “child pornography” in Mr. Joe B Donuts home directory in accordance with the situation outlined in the student scenario. The images have since been deleted and students will need to use the Novell filer program to recover the images
For the second assignment of this lab students will need to record several pieces of information and from a Netware sever utilizing the Novell imanager system and console1.

Class Plan

Lecture Portion – to complete the attached PowerPoint slide show the instructor will require approximately 1 hour

One additional hour of classroom time to complete the assignments is also recommended

Technical Requirements

As mentioned in the student handout students will be divided into teams of 2 due to computer requirements
Two desktop computers will need to be connected to a switch and set up in the following configuration

The server computer must have Vmware Server or Vmware player installed as the Netware server is a live Vmware image.
The second computer can be run from the local operating system however the Novell client and console1 must be installed, if this is not possible then a Vmware workstation image will be used to supplement the real hardware.

Grading Outline for Deliverable

Upon successful completion of this section the student will deliver a live recovery worksheet (comprising 50% of this sections grade points) and a small typed report illustrating the forensics methodology used to gather the information during the exercise (comprising 50% of this sections grade points)

Upon successful completion of this scenario the student will hand in to the instructor one floppy disk with 3 recovered images of “child pornography” recovered from Mr. Donuts home directory, additionally the students will hand in a properly formatted forensics report illustrating there actions, therefore the student will achieve 100% on the practical if the 3 images are restored and teachers judgment be used for marks on the written paper. It is suggested that 50% of the assignment be the practical disk while the remainder 50% be allocated into the written assignment.

How to – Lab

In order to successfully complete scenario 2, students must gather information from the Novell Netware server, only the methodology outlined in the Netware security knowledgebase article “Netware first response” is considered a correct way of completing the assignment, therefore if the instructor observers the student gathering information from another source that portion of the assignment should be graded as a zero.
